What we pursued is the original performance of stereo = realism
Realizing live sound that makes the performer look like an optical illusion
The purpose of Kaguya is to reproduce the sense of presence
Stereo aims to reproduce the performance of the human ear (by a certain method of recording and playing sound). As you all experience, people can recognize where the sound comes from by each sound that comes in from both ears.
Imagine a live venue. When we are there and know the source of each sound, that is, when the sound is captured three-dimensionally, we can feel the presence.
Stereo can be rephrased as aiming at "recreating a sense of reality by making the sound three-dimensional."
Stereo is reproduced by the way it is recorded and played. Most sound sources are recorded in stereo, and one set (two) or more speakers are required for playback.
And the sound is made three-dimensional by the frequency balance of the sound from each speaker.
By the way, the sound is most three-dimensional and the sense of presence reaches its peak at the position where the frequency balance is balanced, but in a general speaker where the unit (circular machine that produces sound) is facing the front, this position You need to be equilibrium in front of both speakers to get. To put it the other way around, you can only get a sufficient sense of presence at that particular position.
Kaguya's goal was to overcome the challenges of ordinary speakers and achieve a three-dimensional sound and a sense of realism. Therefore, Kaguya adopted "omnidirectional".
In a typical speaker, the sound spreads toward the front (unidirectional), but in Kaguya, the sound is designed to spread 360 degrees (omni-directional = all directions).
The sound from the unit installed on top of the bamboo hits the conical diffuser above it and spreads 360 degrees. Moreover, this sound is designed to be evenly diffused.
Therefore, you can hear a balanced frequency balance sound wherever you are, as long as you are not too close to one speaker. In this way, Kaguya succeeded in realizing the original stereo function of reproducing the sense of presence.
Kaguya uses bamboo for environmental and visual reasons, but the biggest factor is that bamboo is a great speaker enclosure. (Container that wraps the unit)
The enclosure is responsible for attenuating unwanted sound coming out of the rear of the unit and for harmonizing the rear sound with the front sound.
However, if the enclosure is too stiff, the unwanted sound coming out of the rear will not be attenuated easily, and the resonating high-pitched sound will be mixed with the sound coming out of the front, making the sound worse. Also, if the material of the enclosure is soft, the enclosure itself will vibrate and the sound will be worse. (Of course, if the sound is bad, you will not get a sense of reality.)
Bamboo, on the other hand, has an appropriate hardness and a complicated structure with knots, making it ideal as an enclosure. The structure also gives the sound warmth.
Low frequency characteristic patent
Kaguya's enclosure uses patented proprietary technology. It is an application of a method called bass reflex phase inversion.
Bass reflex is a method to improve the low frequency characteristics by matching the sound of a certain frequency band from the rear of the unit to the phase of the sound from the front. As a result, the low frequency characteristic which is almost double of the general bass reflex structure was acquired.
Therefore, Kaguya is able to reproduce sufficient bass even though it uses a relatively small unit.
In addition, a large unit has a large vibration plate, which causes a time lag, but by using a small vibration plate, the time lag for the signal can be suppressed, which leads to speed and realism reproduction.
Bamboo is smoked for 6 months, taken out of the kiln and then polished. The surface has a pattern of wiping marks at that time, creating a unique vintage feel.
The overall design has become this shape as a result of pursuing the sound of reproducing the sense of reality. The functional beauty is designed like this, but with a simple and timeless design, the solid feeling of carbonized bamboo works well as an interior, regardless of whether it is Japanese or Western.
